Red Bull: Seamless gearbox, 3 tenths faster

Red Bull RB3
Mark Smith, right hand to Adrian Newey, at Red Bull Racing revealed that not having a reliable and effective seamless gearbox will be a big handicap in 2007.

“The main advantage of the seamless gearbox is seen in the lap times, better from 0.1 to 0.3 seconds. The weight penalty is approximately 1.5 Kg.” Smith added referring to the team’s new gearbox.

The wight penalty is, therefore, a negligible inconvenience especially considering it is situated in the lower part of the car and hence not affecting the gravity center of the car. The Red Bull racing gearbox is made out of aluminum, an inexpensive but less rigid solution compared to the titanium or the carbon used by the top teams.
