Massa puts Ferrari on Pole at Magny Cours

Massa Ferrari Magny Cours 2007

Ferrari were delighted with their comeback at Magny Cours, following the lackluster North American races. Felipe Massa took pole position, only 7 hundredths of a second ahead of McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton. Third was Kimi Raikkonen, who admitted he made a mistake in a corner and therefore was 0.223 seconds slower than Massa. Kubica made a great recovery after the Montreal accident and was 4th fastest. The Renaults of Fisichella and Kovalainen were next, while Heidfeld’s back pain stopped him from going faster than 7th position.

The biggest surprise was Alonso’s gearbox failure at the beginning of Q3, which will cause the Double F1 World Champion to start in 10th spot on the grid. In an interview following the qualifying session, Alonso was quoted as saying that in these circumstances he prefers a wet race tomorrow.

Qualifying proved Friday’s remarkable times for the Ferrari powered Toro Rosso -s were just low fuel lap. Liuzzi failed to pas Q1, while Speed failed to pass Q2.
